The 2012 Chevrolet Volt is considered as one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the market right now. This is because the Volt has the capability to run in pure-electric mode for about 25-50 miles and only needs the assistance of the gas-powered 4-cylinder engine when the lithium-ion battery pack installed on the vehicle is 70% depleted. However, the gas engine does not propel the vehicle itself. It only acts as a generator that supplies the electric charge needed by the electric motor to propel the volt. The engine only powers the Volt's wheel directly when the vehicle is running at higher speeds. Due to this, the actual fuel consumption of the Volt is lower compared to conventional cars with gasoline engines.

The 2012 Chevrolet Volt is a hatchback car. Its exterior design is the same as most hatchbacks that are powered by gasoline engines. With this, buyers with no sufficient know-how of the Volt's history, will surely view this plug-in hybrid as an ordinary car.

The Volt is based on the Chevy Cruze and this is the reason why both of these models are quite similar. Its lines and curves were trimmed well to provide the Volt with a tough and aggressive look. In addition to this the Volt's design has made this car look like a mid-size sports sedan, despite the fact that it is smaller in size compared to the Cruze.

The Volt's interior design might also be considered as a downside. This is because the materials used look cheaper compared to those that are found in other compact cars within the $40,000 price range. The abundance of cheap plastics have even made the overall impression of the Volt's interior worse.

In terms of interior space, the Chevrolet also offers very limited space in its front and rear portion. There is not enough legroom or headroom that would allow the car passengers to move freely. In addition to this, the space of the car's rear seats are too small, since the Volt's battery pack consumed a lot of space.

    Performance   Handling

The 2012 Chevrolet Volt is a front-wheel drive vehicle that is powered by an electric motor. This electric motor is capable of producing up to 149 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. The electric motor derives its power from the car's 16-kilowatthour lithium-ion battery pack. When the battery pack's charge gets depleted the 1.4L, 4-cylinder internal combustion engine kicks in. But, instead of propelling the car's wheels directly, the engine only acts as a generator that provides an electric charge used by the electric motor.

When driven, the 2012 Chevrolet Volt provides quick responses and accelerates quickly. The ride is also very smooth and quiet when the Volt runs on electric mode. But, the ride gets a little bit noisy when the lithium-ion's charge gets depleted and the engine-generator kicks-in. The sound of the revving engine gets noticeable particularly when the Volt runs at higher speeds.

    Fuel Economy

The combination of the electric motor and the 4-cylinder engine that acts as an electric generator when the lithium-ion's electrical charge gets depleted enabled the 2012 Chevrolet Volt to obtain the best fuel-economy. Under normal driving conditions most car experts agree that the Volt could possibly obtain 95 miles per gallon in the city and 93 miles per gallon on the highway.
