Ford Recalls 2011-2013 Fiesta Models Due to Problems on the Airbag

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently confirmed that Ford is recalling a certain number of 2011 and 2013 Ford Fiestas and this is due to an airbag problem that places the passenger seated on the right rear seat to risk in the event of collision.

Based on the information provided by the NHTSA, Ford has recently known that the side curtain airbag on the passenger side of an affected Ford Fiesta will not launch in case of a collision when the front passenger seat is empty. Due to this failure, the right rear seat passenger will most likely obtain a lot of injuries in case of side crashes.

After conducting its own investigation, Ford found out that the main source of the problem was the software used to handle the launching of all the airbags of the Fiesta since this was programmed to suppress the launching of the right side curtain airbag when the front passenger seat has no occupant.

In order to correct this defect, Ford will be recalling about 154,604 units of Ford Fiesta so as to have their software reprogrammed by the company’s dealerships. Although the NHTSA and Ford have not received any accident report or injuries that were caused by the said problem, the car maker still issued a recall order.

Ford has also stated that the information regarding the software’s function that suppresses the launching of the right side curtain airbag when the passenger seat in front is empty was not included on the Fiesta’s owner guide and this might have been the reason why the problem was just discovered recently.

In addition to this, the car maker has also advised the owners of the affected Ford Fiestas to take their vehicles to the nearest dealerships and have it fixed. For those who will not be able to have their vehicles checked by Ford dealerships, they are encouraged not to allow any passenger to seat on the right rear passenger seat most especially when the front passenger seat is empty.

Ford has treated this matter as a serious issue since the 2013 Ford Fiesta is one of the company’s best-selling models. This is currently offered in sedan and hatchback models. This is equipped with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine which is capable of producing a maximum power output of 120 horsepower and 112 lb.-ft. of torque. This version of the Ford Fiesta is also admired by a lot of car experts for its impressive fuel economy.
